Fish Fiasco

Hi everyone,

Okay, so I thought this would be simple. Get a fish, keep it alive. Yeah, as it turns out, that's not so simple. There's a lot that goes into trying to keep a fish swimming along.

So far in our trials with the tank, we've gone through Ellie, Spotty, and now we have Brownie. I have gone from a little tank starter kit to a mini rock vacuum, bacteria starter, ammonia tester kits, live plants, etc.

It's starting to add up. Goldfish are supposed to be simple, right?

I guess part of my problem is that I'm a natural born nurturer. I hate the idea that I didn't care for something well enough, and that resulted in harm. Perhaps keeping fish isn't a very good exercise for me and my overly empathetic nature, but it certainly is a challenge.

I'm doing my best. Everyone keep your fingers crossed for Brownie. I'm going to do my best. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Happy reading,

Jess

The only things I remember from when we kept fish was that plants keep the water aerated, snails help with stuff on the glass, and a tight lid is ESSENTIAL if a cat can drop by. {Smile, wink}

Aw, here's to hoping Brownie makes it!

I don't know. He's either really shy, or he's already not well. I know it takes some sacrificial lambs to get through the time where the bacteria culture that digests the harmful waste products of the fish builds up. But still, there's got to be a better way. At least I'm testing the water. If Brownie doesn't make it, it won't be due to unhealthy water.

Well, I hope Brownie gets over whatever he had, whether it's shyness or something worse. {sympathetic smile}

Golfish can be hard to keep. Not the cleanest of fish out there.

If Brownie doesn't adjust, try a Betta. They're fairly simple and don't require much.

Good luck.

Yeah, I was going to get a betta next time if this one doesn't work. The little one is set on a goldfish though, and doesn't like the bettas.

I had an awesome betta named Alpha once. He was cool. I wouldn't mind getting another one.

I wish i could help, but the last fish i got (my daughters) i went to feed it and i noticed it did not come to the top to feed. i looked closer and it was laying at the bottom of the tank with half of its rib cage showing. Great keeper of fish i am. Good luck with Brownie, tho.

Got a fish update?

Never had great luck with fish. I seem to keep my dogs and cats alive, so I think it might have something to do with water not being my element or something. ;-) Best wishes with Brownie. I do second the Betta advice. They live alone in small tanks and seem content.

So far Brownie is doing good. I've been checking his water for ammonia every night, and if the test comes out green, I've been giving him some fresh water.

So far so good. However, of the three fish we've had in this short time, Brownie is a bit of a dud. He hides all the time. The other two were much more friendly.

So now the one that I manage to keep alive is the least fun fish of the bunch. Great.

Hello!
I live in New Brunswick Canada and I have discovered a caterpillar that I believe to be a Papilio polyxenes. I found it in its "poop" looking stage on a bunch of parsley I have that is sitting in a glass of water on my kitchen windowsill. I never knew much about butterflies until I discovered this little guy and now I am trying to do my best to help him/her transform. Just today it reached its "pre-pupal" stage and I fear the parsley may die before he is done. The chrysalis has already begun to form on the parsley twig so I dare not disturb him ... WHAT DO I DO!?

I wish I could help you with Brownie...but Im afraid I have never owned a fish and know close to nothing about them. Fingers crossed!
