Always Learning

Hi everyone,

I have to keep this short because I'm off to a wedding in about three minutes. It should be a lot of fun, but I wanted to let you know I found out those caterpillars on the cabbages are cutworms, a caterpillar of a little moth.

I found some actual cabbage white caterpillars. They are soft and pretty green, and cute for little caterpillars. I'll post a picture of them next week. But I have a little moral dilemma. What do I do about the cutworms? Technically they are also caterpillars, and I'd hate to be guilty of moth discrimination, but they are eating the resources I planted for my little cabbage white butterfly caterpillars.

What do you think? Feed them to the robins? Or let them be?

Have a great week!

Jess

What if you thinned the cutworm population, reducing their numbers without eliminating them entirely? That's what we usually do with impatiens around here. They're gorgeous flowers, but they'll fill every shady spot you have if you don't take a machete or weed whacker to them once in a while. I do hate to do that, but they can make it hard to get around, and will crowd out ferns and shade-loving orchids if we don't do something. {Smile}

I'm sure the robins would be happy to help you thin the cutworm population. {Smile}

I hope you enjoy the wedding. {Smile}

I like Ms Baldwin's suggestion, a lot. Very Solomonic, n'est pas?

Cutworms don't live very long in my parents' garden. If it's a choice between them or the vegetables, the veggies win. Cutworms can wipe out a garden really quickly around here.
